Narrator Sophie Amoss brings the story of the birth of the Mormon church to life. In 1825 at the age of 22, Emma Hale is living with her family in a rural Pennsylvania settlement when she meets and then marries an itinerant treasure seeker, Joseph Smith, who becomes the founder of the Mormon church. Amoss's voice is soft and gentle as she becomes Emma, who recounts her unusual marriage, religious experiences, and the troubles that dog Smith and his followers. As Emma's reminiscence progresses, Amoss shifts her tone from matter-of-fact to subtly emotional and from joyful to sorrowful, all the while drawing listeners into a time of new and ecstatic Christian sects, including Mormonism--with its unsettling beliefs and practice of polygamy.
