THE CRUX

Gabrielle de Cuir narrates this feminist work, originally published in 1910 and long out of print. After receiving her first kiss from a man known for his wild ways, a young woman falls deeply in love with a man everyone in her life deems unsuitable. After moving to Colorado, she discovers that the man she loves has syphilis and gonorrhea, and she believes that marrying him could permanently taint the bloodline of her family. Gabrielle de Cuir's narration of this unique work of fiction keeps the listener invested in the decisions of several young women who are caught between wise choices and possible foolish futures--as viewed by the author. De Cuir keeps the listener from getting bogged down by vocabulary of the time and keeps the story flowing despite its objectionable theme of eugenics.
