Armchair travelers with a penchant for history are in for a treat with this anthology by writer Paul Bowles. Raphael Corkhill and Mike Ortego set the stage for the 40 fascinating travelogues with their resonant narrations of the Editor's Note and Introduction, both by Paul Theroux. Narrating the bulk of the works is Tom Zahner, whose deft pronunciation of European languages enhances Bowles's portraits of the places he visited, including Paris, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), Thailand, and Tangiers. Zahner's self-possessed performance conveys the deep connections between Bowles and the lands he traveled to and sometimes lived in, which inspired these illuminating, richly descriptive essays. Bowles's insights into time and place are delights to be sampled and relished. M.F. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine [Published: FEBRUARY 2023]
