Barnaby Edwards uses an upper-crust British accent to narrate this detailed account of the rise of Suleyman the Magnificent, the sixteenth-century Ottoman ruler. Fans of world history will sink into this rich imagining of palace life extracted from recorded facts about this period and place. Edwards capably keeps up with the long lists of taxes owed and properties owned by Suleyman, as well as the wide variety of people--mostly men--positioning themselves around his throne. For those not as intrigued by this period, the overwhelming accuracy, at times tipping over into the mundane, may be less engaging. Edwards does as much as he can to enliven this factual examination of life in the sultan's court. M.R. © AudioFile 2022, Portland, Maine [Published: DECEMBER 2022]
