Rosalyn Lander impressively creates a post-WWI atmosphere as former battlefield nurse Bess Crawford finds herself in the midst of a series of country house murders in Yorkshire. Crawford is visiting Neville mansion at the behest of Lady Beatrice, and Lander is at her best portraying this bossy, opinionated aristocrat. Severely injured Gordon Neville denies murdering his friend and fellow soldier by pushing him off a cliff. Clues and suspects multiply as Lander presents evocative descriptions of the countryside, manse, and upstairs/downstairs life. Crawford ministers to Neville while shrewdly assisting creepy Inspector Wade. Heartbreaking wartime memories are atmospheric and often disturbing. Audio is preferable to benefit from the story's emphasis on police procedures and conversations. S.G.B. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine [Published: APRIL 2023]
