This metaphysical thriller set in the near future would challenge any audiobook narrator. Too much of the story pits a love-based religious theory against a proposed brain-to-brain network. Yup, philosophy versus science--always a scintillating debate. After being warned that his ladylove is in danger, Sean Byron McQueen alternates between paranoia and whimpering. Yet versatile narrator Craig Matthew manages to accentuate McQueen's positive attributes, such as his doggedness and creativity. Also, Matthew skillfully brings to life the important, colorful people in McQueen's life, including his brilliant, headstrong lover, M, and the villain of the piece, geriatric spymaster Guru. Matthew emphasizes action and romance so that this audiobook doesn't get too bogged down in its ideology. D.E.M. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine [Published: AUGUST 2023]
