Narrated with a lighthearted lilt, this audiobook doesn't immediately sound like a paranormal urban fantasy. Celeste Crenshaw is an immortal who happens to work for the Kansas City Detective Squad. As she battles mortal bad guys and undead demons, she also must decide how to manage the death of a colleague at the hands of a murderous gang member. She has the ability to grant immortality, but who deserves this gift? Lisa Larsen's narration is adept enough that listeners can follow the complex plot, and her various voices are recognizable, but there are times when her cadence and tone mask the darker side of this plot.
