David de Vries narrates the autobiography of Ludwig Bemelmans, known best as the creator of the beloved Madeline children's books and for his distinct style of illustrations. The audiobook includes the author's observations and activities in Hollywood during the 1950s, with a particular focus on his friendship with the glamorous late-in-life "First Lady of Interior Decoration," Elsie de Wolfe. Sadly, the casting of this audiobook is off. With his gentle and cheery energy, de Vries sounds more suited to a Madeline book, rather than this eloquently worded account with adult themes. His focus is more on diction than tone, which is quite distracting. The narration style is a mismatch to the work. S.S. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine [Published: MARCH 2024]
