Narrator Helen Laser portrays Billie West, a lonely teen who is growing up poor with a mentally ill mother and a worthless stepfather who eyes Billie like an enticing pastry. Karissa Vacker portrays Cassie, a former rich girl who has high ambitions and the guts to make them happen. The pair meet in childhood and promise each other they'll always be friends. In alternating voices, the narrators depict the girls' childhoods, including the danger they experience and the tension that develops between them. Later, when the pair come together again, Laser and Vacker craft an amazing rhythm as the young women confront their toxic friendship. Listeners won't want to miss a word.
