Narrator Max Meyers grabs attention and holds it throughout Schaffert's exploration of a group of ticketed passengers who never boarded the TITANIC for its maiden voyage. Bookstore owner Yorick, Japanese American candy heiress Zinnia, and handsome photographer Haze meet at a gathering of TITANIC "survivors," folks who missed the boat. As Yorick becomes enamored with Haze, a Cyrano de Bergerac-like triangle develops. Haze askes Yorick to write love letters to Zinnia, while Yorick hopes for a relationship with Haze. Meyers's voice is commanding, and his characters are believable. As the inevitable complications arise, emotions become raw, and the outcome is surprising.
