Multiple narrators tell the story of what happens when 18-year-old super influencer Evie disappears, sparking a social media frenzy. Her protective older sister, Hazel, is determined to cut through the chatter and find her. The main narrators, Amara Jasper and Jesse Vilinsky, tell the story from the perspectives of Hazel and Evie, each creating a well-rounded character: the reserved, attention-hating Hazel and Evie, who has long accepted a life that isn't quite her own. The story is peppered with commentary from social media and podcasts voiced by the various narrators, a device that highlights the maelstrom unfolding while also helping to build tension and keep the plot clear.
