Charlotte Cross is an assistant curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City in 1978. She's quietly conducting Egyptology research that harkens back to her only experience in Egypt, which took place before WWII. Linda Jones's excellent narration reflects Charlotte's ambivalence: She's determined to prove her controversial theory about an Egyptian ruler but fearful of returning to Cairo and reliving her devastating experience of 1936. Young student Annie--voiced by Jones with charming yet annoying naïveté--is assigned to help Charlotte organize the Met Gala display, featuring a priceless Egyptian necklace. When an artifact is stolen, the two women travel to Egypt to pursue the thief and to prove Charlotte's hypothesis. Narrating the rich descriptions of the Valley of the Kings, Jones brings Cairo to life. N.M.C. © AudioFile 2025, Portland, Maine [Published: JANUARY 2025]
