In this seamless marriage of author and narrator, we consider the nature of love and forgiveness and how much a person can change. That person is Lord Lucan, the real-life British peer who vanished in 1974 after the murder of his children’s nanny. His disappearance and presumed guilt have inspired many writers but few as subtly as Heather Rose, who explores responsibility and redemption in this riveting novel. The book is set in England, Kenya, and finally Tasmania, to which a changed Lucan removes himself. So adept is Humphrey Bower at creating individual characterizations that this bravura one-man performance masquerades as a fine full-cast recording.
