From firm-footed reality, Jan Marks's short stories all take quick but logical left turns into the surreal--making them ideal as read-alouds. Quickly hooked, the listener has not long to wait for the eerie resolution: each is a guaranteed chill down the back. Brigit Forsyth's briskly paced, no-nonsense reading is the perfect vehicle for conveying even the most flat-footed disbeliever beyond the boundaries of doubt: if she can recite this all so blithely, well... it just might be true after all.
