JESUS & THE SWEET PILGRIM BAPTIST CHURCH

by | Read by Earle Hyman

Storytelling • 2.3 hrs. • Unabridged • © 1993

Clayton Sullivan, a retired Baptist minister, has written a modern fable about religious visions, prejudice and rednecks in Mississippi during the days of voter registration. The African-American congregation of the Sweet Pilgrim Church, populated by denizens of the tin-roofed shantytown known as Catfish Landing, witness a series of bizarre events, commencing with the "Sweetwater Pilgrim Miracle." Veteran actor/reader Earle Hyman deftly narrates this parable of Jesus, Simon and Peter who appear before the congregation in the guise of two middle-aged Jewish ladies. The spoken text is accompanied by appropriate music and chapter endings. All in all, a delightful rendering of a whimsical tale with a serious message.
