Louise Erdrich richly details the lives of intertwined generations, white and Native American, in the town of Pluto, North Dakota. Kathleen McInerney shines as Evelina Harp, who tells what she knows about the mystery that haunts the town’s residents, the unsolved murder of a family in 1911. Peter Francis James's deep voice provides an excellent counterpoint to McInerney’s as he gives the perspective of Antone Bazil Coutts, another descendent whose life is deeply influenced by the events of the past. Erdrich is a master storyteller known for her compelling novels, and her lyrical, recursive narrative style is enriched by the narrators' ability to fully portray her characters. This ideal match of writer and readers creates a memorable and moving experience. R.F.
