Frank Muller and Pat Conroy create iconic synchronicity of narrator and author in this story set in the South Carolina low country. The saga of the Wingo family--twins Tom and Savannah, brother Luke, and their parents--is brilliantly narrated by Muller. He excels at delivering the evocative descriptions of the marshes and creeks that reveal Conroy's great love of the natural environment. Muller maintains clear character portraits through the multiple time periods and flashbacks. Listeners can follow the shifts easily because of Muller's precise character voices but also because his emotional tone is so strong and consistent. He expertly captures the Wingos' youthful bravado, humor, and independence yet never lets up with the story's dark repression and lurking violence. An extraordinary listening experience. R.F.W.
