TALES OF THE PACIFIC RIM: DREAMS & ILLUSIONS

by | Read by Brenda Wong Aoki

Storytelling • 45 mins. • • ©

Performance artist Aoki, who is trained in acting, modern dance and classical Japanese Noh and Kyogen techniques, and musician/composer Mark Izu, a pioneer of Asian-American jazz, give a spectacular presentation of six stories. They include re-tellings of old tales ("Twilight Crane" from Japan and "The Mirror " from Korea), a contemporary Hawaiian story with an ecological message, and a selection about Aoki's visits to her grandfather in California. Aoki's storytelling voice is energetic and spellbinding; she maintains the spirit of the ancient Asian oral tradition while giving her stories a modern and universal appeal. The only thing that could top this listening experience would be attending one of Aoki's live performances. C.A. ©AudioFile, Portland, Maine [Published: FEB 93]
