The blend of fantasy and aspects of feudal Japan makes this story rich and original. Marriott’s wonderful characters and use of folklore gain further authenticity through Amy Rubinate’s performance. She gives the diversity of homelands that are part of the novel’s setting full credibility with a variety of accents and inflections. The main character, Suzume, lives in a world of shadow weavers, people who can cast shadows and create illusions. Rubinate’s inspired portrayal of Suzume captures the many facets of her personality: conflicted but passionate, strong but fragile. As narrator, she gives power to Suzume’s story by portraying her as a flawed, lovely girl. C.C. © AudioFile 2012, Portland, Maine [Published: AUGUST 2012]
