When people talk about the United States being a land of opportunity where anyone with enough talent and gumption can achieve his or her goals, they are talking about someone exactly like Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. She went from a Bronx housing project to the Ivy League to prosecutory law and federal judgeship through hard work, government help, and a sharp intellect. It’s quite a story. The book is read beautifully by the elegant, captivating Rita Moreno. (Sotomayor herself reads the preface and prologue.) Moreno has a gentle but authoritative voice, and her professional training yields an intelligent, engaging work. Her pacing keeps the story moving, and she speaks fluent Spanish, so Sotomayor’s family stories get the authentic treatment they deserve.
