If wishing could make it true, Joel would be a rithmatist, a wizard who creates magic through chalk drawings. Nonetheless, he’s determined to learn as much as he can about the art. When young rithmatists start to disappear, he sets out to investigate. Narrator Michael Kramer follows the intensity of the plot, building suspense as needed. He creates definitive contrast between the characters, especially between the rithmatist academics and the soldier who leads the investigation and between Joel and the female rithmatist student he befriends. Although not mentioned in the audiobook, the illustrations from the book are available on the author’s Web site. J.E.M. 2014 Audies Finalist © AudioFile 2013, Portland, Maine [Published: JULY 2013]
