SEE ROCK CITY

In the 1950s, barns along North Carolina's highways sported huge letters reading "See Rock City." Whenever Donald Davis or his little brother would shout, "See Rock City!," their dad would treat them to a Coca-Cola. As the family was planning a vacation trip to Daytona Beach, a neighbor who'd been there repeated over and over in a heavy Southern drawl, "It's hot, hot, HOT down there!" When the family took along only summer clothing, they nearly froze when they had their first experience with air-conditioning.
