In the way of children, Harriet Gibson's world is loving and secure, with no worries about her life or her future. But her world is torn apart the day her mother is killed, and nothing will ever be the same. Christina Moore's narration is exceptional--she creates vivid pictures and engages us completely in Harry's world--her numbness and loss of reality at her mother's death, her confusion and frustration with her colt, her anger towards her Aunt Sarah and her new life. Moore creates unique voices for all the characters and perfectly portrays Harry's changing emotions. Aunt Sarah is gruff, rigid, and controlling; but when Harry gets hurt, we hear softness and warmth in her soothing tones. In this story about life, and change, and growing up, Moore moves us thoughtfully and hopefully towards the end--not the end we are expecting, or wanting, but one that is subtle, satisfying, and somehow right.
