Chinua Achebe is one of Africa's most well-known writers. His portrayals of the Igbo people of Nigeria offer insight into a native culture under siege by Western values. Peter Jay Fernandez’s narration rings with vitality as the main characters are engaged in turf wars for the hearts and minds of villagers. Fernandez realistically represents the rhythms of Igbo words and accented English for an authentic listening experience. His precise dramatizations of the range of characters include native priests and Christian missionaries. Fernandez's deft management of multiple personas allows listeners to keep track of the dialogue between multiple speakers. In addition, his controlled pace helps make sense of the complicated plot. This is an excellent reading of a literary masterpiece. M.R. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award © AudioFile 2015, Portland, Maine [Published: OCTOBER 2015]
