Captain Ross Poldark returns from America to his family home in Cornwall, where he finds much disappointment. Narrator Oliver Hembrough’s plethora of accents and voices captures the diverse characters and vivid atmosphere of this rich family saga. Not only does Hembrough do a good job with the women in Poldark’s life, but he also effectively portrays the varied socioeconomic positions of the myriad characters through dialogue that ranges from the slurred speech of the housekeepers and miners to the crisp speech of Poldark and his peers. Variations in Hembrough’s cadence and pitch enhance the drama of the story, creating an intriguing listen for lovers of historical fiction and romance. M.F.
