Jennifer Woodward narrates this sprawling story of Palestinian love and loss in subdued tones. She manages capably with the Arabic words peppered throughout the novel, giving her storytelling authenticity and musicality. Her precise rhythm and pace will remind listeners of lyrical poetry readings. Yet, if listened to for long stretches, the consistent narration lacks variation, and the listener's attention may wander. On the whole, this title will appeal to those interested in historical fiction set in the Middle East. Through the characters, the listener is brought face to face with the decisions of governments and the personal costs they exact from individuals.
