Narrator Sandy Rustin enhances every aspect of this fantasy, which follows cousins Lou and Dacia, Americans traveling to Romania for the first time to meet their mothers' family. Rustin's narration has a formality that suits the Victorian era and the girls' privileged lives, and she creates voices for secondary characters that range appropriately over many nationalities and personalities. She particularly shines in her characterization of Lou, who starts the story with a tentative nature but grows in power and confidence as she gets drawn further into her family's supernatural secrets and discovers her shape-shifting abilities. Listeners will enjoy this atmospheric blend of historical, horror, adventure, and epistolary fiction. A.F. © AudioFile 2015, Portland, Maine [Published: OCTOBER 2015]
