Told as a series of letters written to his daughter, this is the story of the outlaw folk hero of Australia, Ned Kelly. Recalling the cowboy tales of the Old West but without the romance or sentiment, Carey creates a completely believable world in the Outback of the 1800s. Gianfranco Negroponte gives an out and out perfect performance. The narrative voice, the colloquial twang, the timing, and the emotional content all combine in a tour de force that is utterly authentic. Here is a narrator you will want to keep an eye (or an ear) out for. An added bonus is an interview with the author, especially if you're interested in how and why he chooses his subjects. D.G.
