Narrator Robert G. Slade adopts a whimsical tone, at times, in the style of the classic THOUSAND AND ONE NIGHTS. Rushdie's story recounts a war between our reality and that of the jinni, a species of demigods, and Slade infuses this conflict with the authority of a news reporter. At the same time, Slade allows listeners to empathize with Mr. Geronimo, a landscaper who inexplicably develops the ability to levitate. On a deeper level, Slade uses pauses, pacing, and emphasis to portray Rushdie's premise that it is through art that we come to understand the randomness of world events. In the end, Slade provides a worthy guide through Rushdie's fanciful illogic. R.O. © AudioFile 2015, Portland, Maine [Published: SEPTEMBER 2015]
