As the subtitle suggests, this is a great American immigration story, both in its scope and in its heart, and David Colacci's steady, thoughtful narration does justice to each. Longtime NPR correspondent Tom Gjelten takes a look back at the 50 years since the passage of the 1965 Immigration Act, which did away with national quotas and opened America's borders not only to more immigrants but also to immigrants from more diverse origins. Colacci's even modulation guides listeners through an effective blend of history and personal interviews. Individual stories are woven throughout, exploring issues of identity and integration, as well as backlash, offering insight into life as "the other." Despite the ever-present backdrop of political tension, Colacci's tone remains hopeful looking forward. A.S. © AudioFile 2017, Portland, Maine [Published: MAY 2017]
