Listeners join modern-day "delivery consultant" (a.k.a. exorcist) Merrily Watkins's investigation of an apparently haunted house. On the border of England and Wales, the house, with its royal connections, is pivotal to a tale that interweaves murder and the supernatural. Narrator Emma Powell does a sterling job of keeping the elaborate plot on track and creating an atmosphere of unease. Powell's clear portrayals of the key characters, both male and female, are highly effective in providing distinctive identities, and her subtle use of accents gives them authenticity. Listeners may want to hear previous entries in the series as the relationships and backstories of some key characters are implied rather than explained.
