Moss's romance is engaging and original, but Carmen Rose's uneven narration doesn't do full justice to the inventive plot or strong characters. Hugh Beaufort is determined to marry a well-mannered woman--certainly not the impulsive, emotional Susannah Tyrell. But when Susannah finds herself lost in the English woods, Beaumont comes to her rescue, little imagining the dangers involved, or the passion they will discover together. Rose generally provides distinct voices for the sizable, diverse cast, though her regional accents fade in and out. Her delivery, however, is curiously flat; many sentences have the same cadence, regardless of content. As a result, emotional and descriptive moments are blunted, making it difficult for listeners to become immersed in this heady tale.
