Laura Ingalls Wilder's books have been treasured by generations of readers who have immersed themselves in her stories of American pioneer life. At first, listeners may be a bit put off by this audio production. As the narration moves between John Morgan's historical narrative and Tish Hicks's performance of the various letters, the pauses after section headings are awkward until one gets accustomed to the production's cadence. However, a little patience goes a long way. Morgan and Hicks are excellent, offering clear and rich deliveries with a warmth worthy of Ingalls herself. While fans might wish for more detail about her daily life--the biographical information is largely limited to snippets between the letters--this fascinating look at American history through letters and postcards is an unexpected surprise.
