The Age of Fable, first published in 1855, is a rather stuffy and provincial reference work intended to illuminate the many references to Greek and Roman mythology in “elegant” literature. It may still serve that purpose, but its plodding retellings of the ancient tales do not invite extended reading. Thus, it is a puzzling choice for a completely unindexed audiobook. Reader Mary Woods does as much with this bloodless text as anyone could, reading in a clear and pleasant voice without attempting to inject drama where there is none. One wonders how she stayed awake. J.N. ©AudioFile, Portland, Maine [Published: DEC 93]
