Narrator Elizabeth Bidwell makes her audiobook debut in a story featuring willful ladies, dashing gentlemen, and unruly parakeets. Six years ago, Lord Whitly unintentionally saddled Mari Powel with the nickname "Wayward Welsh," and she has resented him ever since. Bidwell's stage experience stands her in good stead as she voices characters from a variety of backgrounds. A particular delight is the Welsh inflections of Mari's father. While Bidwell's narration is generally quite well done--a tavern brawl in a seedy part of town is a rollicking interlude--overall her pacing is rather slow, turning a slightly overlong book into a very long book. However, this is a minor quibble with an otherwise solid performance. K.M.P. © AudioFile 2017, Portland, Maine [Published: SEPTEMBER 2017]
