Malcolm Hillgartner is the perfect narrator for this magnificent display of White's restrained literary style. Some of the essays are true gems. They have also become a marvelous tour through the life of a Maine resident and NEW YORKER writer in the middle decades of the twentieth century with concern for nuclear war, trains, summer houses, changes in New York City, ocean travel, and the passage of time. Hillgartner's smooth, cultured baritone and practiced delivery allow us to yearn unselfconsciously for the past. He seems as at home with White's homage to WALDEN as he is with White's heartfelt farewell to the Ford Model T. He conveys embarrassment in recounting White's boyish adventures and earnestness in imparting the wisdom of age. Great listening. F.C. © AudioFile 2016, Portland, Maine [Published: SEPTEMBER 2016]
