Joanna Brady fans will be pleased to return to familiar territory: She's running for reelection as sheriff, and preparing to have another baby. Narrator Hillary Huber portrays Brady's professionalism in the midst of a horrible personal tragedy when her mother and stepfather perish in an RV accident. Ali Reynolds, the intrepid investigative reporter from other Jance novels, partners with Brady to examine the suspicious circumstances of the wreck. Huber's straightforward reading style doesn't significantly differentiate between the two women, but her conversational pacing is delightful. Huber's deft touch with the Joanna Brady stories immerses the listener in the characters' lives, leaving one wishing this novella had gone on longer.
