Necar Zadegan narrates the powerful story of a mother's desperate struggle to extricate herself and her child from a hopeless existence in Iran. In 2009, the author, an émigré, returned to Iran from Ireland to introduce her very young child to her father. The father, abusive and unstable, then refuses to let the child leave. Zadegan uses tone and pacing to express Hezari's pain and strength. Throughout the first portion of the audiobook, it's difficult to listen as Zadegan takes listeners down Hezari's fateful path. Each piece of foreshadowing makes one want to beg her to stop and turn around. Hezari's account of her terrible journey will keep listeners on the edges of their seats.
