Narrator Romola Garai brings listeners into the inquisitive and observant mind of Sofia Papastergiadis, a timid unemployed anthropologist turned barista. In a story that is at times dreamy and at times chilling, Garai portrays Sofia, her mother, Rose, and their strange tenure on the coast of Spain, where the eccentric Dr. Gomez works to identify the source of Rose's enigmatic ailments. Garai narrates Sofia's problematic relationship with her mother in an almost detached, anthropological way, which she extends to Sofia's attempts to connect with others in the sleepy town. Garai is strongest when she's inside Sofia's head, tracing her journey to becoming a bolder and more assertive force, though her performances of the mysterious German lover, Ingrid, and demanding Rose are also noteworthy.
