Narrator Emily Woo Zeller's facility with Asian languages is put to good use in this second part of a trilogy based on Japanese mythology As Emi continues her quest to restore balance to the universe and prepares to become a host for a goddess, Zeller expresses Emi's growing confusion. She's happy about the romantic attraction between her and one of the spirits. But that spirit has a longstanding animosity toward the goddess whom Emi will soon host, and Zeller deftly reflects that tension. Zeller also presents the story's large collection of spirits and beings with range and diversity. The background contained in the first book in the trilogy, RED WINTER, would be helpful in providing context for the various threads of the story but isn't essential.
