Author/narrator M.J. Trow is convincing as playwright Christopher "Kit" Marlowe is sent to the English School in France to search for Catholic traitor Matthew Baxter. Upon arrival, Marlowe sounds chagrined to learn that things are not what they seem. Listeners will be transported by Trow's accents for diverse characters, including French prostitutes and academics. Especially amusing is his delivery of rousing anti-French or anti-English humor, depending on who's speaking. Old-fashioned words like "popinjay" and "harlot" provide atmosphere. Trow's best creations are vintner Solomon Aldred, whose lively personality and local connections help Marlowe, and Aldred's wife, who professes to need her "beauty sleep" when the going gets tough.
