While narrator Nigel Patterson is less than superb with his American regional accents, and he doesn't create distinct voices for the many characters in this audiobook, he is marvelous with the varied emotions of those characters. Trollope keeps us clear on who is speaking, so individual voices are not necessary, and if we can't always distinguish between Trevelyan, Stanbury, Glascock, and Burgess, that only serves to remind us of the similarities in their positions in the story. They're all men in love with women who might bend to the social rules of their day, but only out of love--they are classically strong Trollope heroines. Patterson gives us the heart of this inquiry into the limitations placed on Victorian women. D.M.H. © AudioFile 2017, Portland, Maine [Published: SEPTEMBER 2017]
