Narrating Cottrell's perplexing character study is no easy feat. As the protagonist, Helen, searches for clues about the suicide of her adoptive brother, it becomes evident that her perception of herself is not entirely accurate. Nancy Wu's narration largely rises to this challenge. Engaging and humorous, Wu offers a personal and wry reading, although perhaps the disparity between the outside world and Helen's thoughts could be even more pronounced. Also, Wu has a natural rhythm and flow to her reading, which at points work against the unnaturalness of the novel's protagonist. But, overall, Wu brings sensitivity and intelligence to this portrait of an elusive and eccentric woman. Z.S. © AudioFile 2017, Portland, Maine [Published: MAY 2017]
