Narrator Kathleen McInerney's youthful voice delivers the many emotions of 12-year-old Sara Johnston-Fischer. Sara's enthusiasm for a summer with two friends turns to resentment when one of Sara's two mothers wins a family train trip across the country. On the trip, Sara withdraws into keeping a journal, but her animosity increases when her mother continually asks her to share her impressions--which listeners do get to hear. McInerney seamlessly delivers the diversity of Sara's writing, which includes guidebook quotes, "fun facts" related to stops, descriptions of people she meets, and her thoughts on family, particularly her reactions to her sisters--one loud, one opinionated. Happily, there's humor in the story, and McInerney ensures that Sara's exasperation sounds understandable, not bratty. S.W. © AudioFile 2017, Portland, Maine [Published: MAY 2017]
