This is a haunting--both literally and metaphorically--tale of a young man named Mahony, who is searching for the truth about his past and what happened to his mother. Narrator Aiden Kelly's lilting Irish accent is at once soothing and engaging. Although the story starts somewhat slowly as Kidd focuses more on lyrical writing than on plot, when the tension and mystery begin to build, they're even more appealing. Kelly's matter-of-fact tone goes a long way to selling the ghosts (both human and animal) and other mystical aspects of the story. All in all, this literary and supernatural crime novel is heartfelt and enrapturing, qualities that are enhanced by Kelly's narration. J.L.K. © AudioFile 2017, Portland, Maine [Published: APRIL 2017]
