Heartsick at the abrupt death of a sibling and the loss of her fiancé, Emily Nunn turns to food for comfort. Her memoir blends humor and sorrow, recalling the works of Ruth Reichl, Cheryl Strayed, and David Sedaris in turns, as she details her story of finding solace and healing through food and friendship. Narrator Candace Thaxton conjures a host of vivid incidental voices--those of Southern relatives and concerned friends--as Nunn visits people from her past, cooking with and for them. Thaxton reads the recipes included at a good pace: slow enough for listeners to capture but quick enough to maintain their interest. Perhaps a bit more at home conveying Nunn's sarcasm than her despair, Thaxton manages to colorfully depict the touching insights Nunn shares in her journey.
