This exploration of the islands in the dangerous strait between Australia and Tasmania is made personal by the author's visits or attempted visits to many of them. Hearing his experiences in his own voice--likable, slightly scratchy, with a light Australian accent--is a strong, but not unmixed, plus. He gives the text its proper sense, expression, and emotional weight--something not every author can do--but at times he takes on a studied or slightly stilted manner, or falls into a lilting tone or repetitive pattern, that makes his reading sound self-conscious and unnatural. Often enough, however, he sounds unaffected and affable, and his wry and self-deprecating humor comes through. The material is often absorbing, and Veitch makes it both personal and, ultimately, enjoyable. W.M. © AudioFile 2017, Portland, Maine [Published: AUGUST 2017]
