NOTES ON BLINDNESS A Journey Through the Dark

Narrator Nicholas Guy Smith touchingly portrays academic-theologian-writer John Hull as he descends into blindness days before his son is born. Hull kept a meticulous diary on audiotape as he adjusted to his disability. Smith delivers Hull's graphic descriptions of caring for his children, walking to work, and delivering lectures--all without vision. Listeners will share his sorrow as he describes his feeling of isolation, depression, and thoughts on space and time. Most painful is hearing his young children slowly comprehend their beloved dad's blindness as they ask difficult questions, which he lovingly answers. It's a joy to hear Smith capture how his dynamic personality reemerges as he adapts. The epilogue by Marilyn, his wife, is uplifting. The book was made into a documentary.
