Set in an Australian town, Sarah Bailey's first novel has listeners riveted from the start. Narrator Kate Hosking keeps it all authentic with a Down Under accent for police detective Gemma Woodstock, whom she gives a low, authoritative voice. Gemma is the lead in a murder investigation that causes memories of her own to resurface. Two stories merge into one as Gemma's thoughts are juxtaposed with the ongoing investigation, which takes place amid her love affair with fellow officer Felix. Sometimes nearly hysterical and at other times tensely controlled, Hosking's resonant character portrayals take listeners on a roller-coaster ride as the fast-paced action drives the story.
