Joe Barrett's easy, convivial narration grounds this increasingly bizarre tale of psychic horror and extrasensory perception. He maintains the listener's empathy with the characters, even as their monstrosity becomes clear. Teenagers Gillian and Peter may live separate lives, but they are psychic twins, mentally bonded and sharing a potentially devastating power that they are growing to understand--and that plenty of hungry desperate people would kill to control. Barrett employs light accents and shifts in cadence to good effect, making the large, disparate cast easily discernible. His ability capture the youth, confusion, and impulsivity of the teenage girls isn't as effective, however, and also draws attention to John Farris's occasionally uncomfortable focus on the female body throughout this somewhat dated story.
